CBC’S George Smith Presents Don Wood Lecture Nov. 9
Queen’s Industrial Relations Centre and the MIR Program of the School of Policy Studies are pleased to announce that George C.B. Smith, Vice-President, Human Resources and Organization at CBC/Radio-Canada, is the Fall 2006 recipient of the Don Wood Visiting Lectureship in Industrial Relations.
The title of Mr. Smith’s public lecture is “Strategic Negotiations: Perspectives from a Road Well-Travelled”. The event will take place on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 4 p.m. in Conference Room 202, Policy Studies Building.
Mr. Smith is responsible for all aspects of human resources and industrial relations at CBC/Radio-Canada. Prior to joining CBC, he was Vice-President, Industrial Relations, with CP Rail System. Before joining CP Rail, Mr. Smith held a variety of human resources positions in the Canadian transportation industry, most notably that of Senior Director of Employee Relations at Air Canada for 10 years.
Mr. Smith has an Honours degree in Commerce from Queen’s University and a Master’s of Industrial Relations degree from University of Toronto. He has taught a course on “The Strategic Management of Industrial Relations” in the Executive MBA program at Concordia University in Montréal for eight years, and is a frequent lecturer at various other university and corporate groups. In 1998, he received the Morley Gunderson Award from the University of Toronto Centre for Industrial Relations in recognition of his achievements in the field of industrial relations.
Mr. Smith is currently Chair of the Federally Regulated Employers - Transportation and Communication (FETCO), a federal employers group which interacts with Canadian government politicians and policy makers particularly as it relates to laws and regulations impacting industrial relations, employment standards, and health and safety.
The Lectureship was established in 1987 to honour the late Dr. W. Donald Wood, Professor Emeritus, Queen’s University and former director of the Industrial Relations Centre and School of Industrial Relations at Queen’s. The purpose of the Lectureship is to bring to Queen’s University distinguished individuals who have made an important contribution to industrial relations in Canada and in other countries. Such persons are either senior scholars from the academic world or public figures from business, trade unions, or government.
Note: The Policy Studies Building is located at 138 Union Street (between Albert Street and University Avenue). The building is on the south side of Union Street and across the street from Goodes Hall. The main entrance is on Union Street and enters onto Level 2 and the building’s main lobby. Conference room 202 is off the main lobby.
