High Performance Professional Teams: A Symposium
Wednesday, Oct. 12
8:30 a.m. to noon
Queen's University, Policy Studies Building, Room 202
The use of teams and team-based structures has become a dominant business design throughout North America, widely-adopted to increase overall organizational effectiveness and business performance. Against a background of intense globalization, rapid technological innovation and an increasingly educated workforce composed largely of knowledge workers, organizations need to respond to the challenges of complex issues and changing work and employment relationships in a new economy. Research has shown that group composition, group cohesion, group organization, group skills (communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution), leadership and development contribute to team performance. It has also been shown that effective implementation of self-managing work teams in manufacturing enterprises confer advantages in both efficiency and performance. However, relatively little research has addressed the dynamics, development and performance of multidisciplinary teams composed of groups of professionals.
The prevalence and growing importance of high performance professional teams raises a number of questions. This symposium is designed to bring together academics engaged in research on high performance professional teams as well as a broader audience of scholars, researchers, students, and practitioners in order to share new research findings, develop a broader understanding of this current workplace issue, and stimulate discussion and further research.
The symposium is open to all academics, students and practitioners.
