After the (Program) Rush: IRC Survey Shows How Organizational Learners Are Supported
Queen’s Industrial Relations Centre asked its alumni in the summer of 2006 to complete an online survey investigating how professional development is supported within organizations. In particular, the Centre wanted to identify the processes in place to ensure that newly acquired knowledge and skills are applied and shared when learners return to the workplace.
The final report, based on the 118 responses received, is a useful snapshot of how organizations are currently supporting their learners. While not a scientific study, the survey provides valuable information, both for leaders who sponsor training for employees and for managers and staff who attend professional development programs.
Results demonstrate how various sectors and industries measure up in terms of learner-support practices, and provide new ideas about how to ensure knowledge is spread throughout organizations.
Fast facts about survey respondents:
- Of the 118 responses, 48% were from the Public Sector; 43% from the Private Sector; and 9% were Other (i.e., nongovernmental organizations, consultants)
- Most respondents were Managers (44%) or Directors (18%)
Overall findings:
- 90% of respondents are expected to apply their new skills and learnings after returning from a program
- The majority of respondents meet with their manager before an educational program (80%) as well as afterward (71%)
- Most respondents (68%) are expected to share what they have learned with their workplace colleagues
